Robert Schumann's Op. 14 Sonata (1836) was named Concerto Without Orchestra by Schumann's publisher Tobias Haslinger, in an attempt for it to appeal to a wider audience. While this title was not well received by the likes of Liszt or Ignaz Moscheles (to whom the work was dedicated), it is in some ways an apt moniker that reflects its immensity The Fantasy in C Major, Opus 17, is a very good piece to start with as a way into Schumann's piano solo works. During the first 10 years of his composing career Schumann focused entirely on works for solo piano, and it wasn't until shortly after his marriage that he began to branch out into other genres (song, chamber, symphony, concerto etc)

This became a popular concerto coupling back in the days of vinyl, as the pieces shared similar keys, lengths, and orchestral scorings. They fit comfortably on one LP, one to a side, and in fact that is the way this particular recording was first issued And both fit very comfortably together as a recorded double bill, a coupling that has attracted some of the greatest pianists of the postwar years: Claudio Arrau with Colin Davis and the Boston Symphony, Leon Fleisher with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra, Walter Gieseking with Wilhelm Furtwängler and the Berlin Philharmonic, Sviatoslav Richter with Lovro von Matacic and the Monte Carlo National Opera Orchestra, and this recording by Stephen Kovacevich with Colin Davis and the BBC. 14: Busoni: Piano Concerto. Perhaps for Liszt the piano part is too subtle and unshowy, but in the hands of a gifted pianist it has great dash, even glitter. There are simply too many recordings of this beloved work to offer a series of comparison, but be it said that I've listened to my fair share of them and believe that Ingrid Fliter's performance can hold its own among the best I've heard. What do you think is the best recording of the Grieg Conerto? I have heard that the Rubinstein, Perahia, and Lupu performances are very good, but there might be a 'definitive' recording that I don't know about etc. I think I accidentally posted this as the Schumann Concerto but I can't see because Google is so damn slow. Anyway, as they often com He has done anything but. This recording is unusual in several respects. It eschews the almost universal pairing with the Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16, in favor of a pair of late Schumann works that are rarely performed. But the real news here is the antiheroic and completely counter-to-type Schumann concerto itself Several features of the symphony, such as the thematic connections between movements and the unconventional new emphasis on elements of sonata form, also characterize Schumann's only piano concerto, composed in 1841 as well, which has been interpreted as a poetic declaration of love to Clara That makes live recordings such as this, released for the first time, all the more precious: at her only performance in Lucerne in summer 1960, Annie Fischer realised a sensitive, chamber-like and exceptionally poetic reading of the Schumann Piano Concerto with which she garnered unusually fervent success, according to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung Guys, what's your favorite recording of the Schumann Piano Concerto? 9 comments. share. save. hide. report. 100% Upvoted. The year was 1842 and Robert Schumann was on a roll. In just over nine months the composer, who up until that point had written mostly piano music and songs, completed the three Op. 41 string quartets, a piano quintet (Op. 44), a piano quartet (Op. 47), and the Fantasiestücke piano trio (Op. 88).
